SSU Model United Nations Club attends conference
Issue date: 4/25/02 Section: Commentary
The Model United Nations Club attended the 26th Annual Arrowhead Model United Nations Conference at Minnesota State University Moorhead from April 18 to April 21. Delegations from colleges from North and South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Nebraska, and Canada attended the conference. One of the participating colleges hosts the conference every year.
Each college sends delegations representing one or more of the member-states of the United Nations to the conference. The delegations meet in United Nations committees that include the Political and Security Committee, Economics and Finance Committee, Social and Humanitarian Committee, Environmental Committee, and the Security Council.
Delegates submit resolutions that offer solutions to real-world problems, such as terrorism, poverty, and environmental degradation. Each committee considered a number of resolutions during the conference.
The conference was filled with fun and surprises. Opening night was an experience that all of the delegates and advisors will not soon forget. Lech Walesa, who is the former president of Poland, was the guest speaker. Walesa was the main driving force behind "Solidarity" in Poland in 1980s. The Communist Polish government imprisoned Walesa for his political activities in 1981. Although the Polish government outlawed the organization, Walesa kept Solidarity alive throughout the 1980s. In 1990, Walesa became the first democratically elected president of Poland, receiving 74 percent of the vote. He received the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts and accomplishments.
Minnesota State University Moorhead held their annual Celebration of Nations for us. It was not only informative, but a lot of fun. They had booths from many nations of the world where you could have your name written in different languages, taste their foods, see their history, arts and crafts. A show of native dancing and singing from all the nations represented was the highlight of the Celebration of Nations. The last night of the conference ended with a banquet that featured an informative talk by Dr. Jean Krasno, who is the Executive Director of the Academic Council on the United Nations System at Yale University.
Students from Southwest State University represented three countries: Colombia, Malaysia, and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. Students from Southwest State University attending the conference included: Benjamin Robinson, Donna Landreth, Michelle Maxwell, Jacob Wasmund, Scott Owens, Katherine Reed, Jesse Mickels, Sara Zylstra, Junnie Lai, Susan Nyabidi, Amir Maleki, Kelsey Klemm, Kevin Blauth. Professor Chris McHorney, who is the advisor for the Model United Nations Club, served as the chair of the Economics and Finance Committee.
