Evol Demo Review

Issue date: 2/3/10 Section: Arts & Entertainment
Two weeks ago, I exchanged Demo CDs with Andy Henrikson, a freshman music major here at Southwest Minnesota State University. His band's name is Evol, the word 'Love' spelt backwards. The band was formed in Henrikson's basement around 2006. This was a sort of re-formation that all the members came back together for from a previous band project that ended, due to a conflict-of-interest among band members. Andy Henrikson-Drums, Tregg Christiansen-Guitar/Vocals and Jesse Breems-Bass Guitar/Vocals make up the band.
There are three songs on the demo, and each one possesses a quality reminiscent of what made rock music great.
The first song, entitled "Never-Ending," has no need to stop if it did not will itself to, especially when talent meets creativity. The second track, "The Whiskey," starts with a guitar-riff similar to that of which can be found in AC-DC's "TNT." The sound hails immediate influence from when American Blues made the transition to Rock and Roll. At last, but far from least, "Barnyard-Stomp," is straight out of the late 1960's. The guitar and vocals have Jimmy Hendrix styling and energy to them. The drums are clean with a classic rock feel. The lyrics were written to spread a message of love, but are sung with sexual ferocity. Added to the mix is a playful whistle in between a break in the guitar solo.
Evol is a band that would benefit the listeners of "Mainstream Music" to expose them to what GOOD music is again. These three each hold commanding talent over their instrument and work musical wonders together. Their Demo was recorded in February-March of 2009, by Todd Sonnenburg, who owns a studio in Minneota, Minn. Evol does about four shows a year, but would love to do more, upon request.
The band can be contacted on various websites: reverbnation.com/evollove, Unsigned.com/evol, fanfound.com/artist/?evol, eventorb.com/evol, and myspace.com/evolband.
