Super Bowl XLIV: Who Wants It More?

Well, it has come to this. After both teams ending on a losing streak to end their seasons, the 13-3 New Orleans Saints will meet the 14-2 Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl XLIV, hosted by Sun Life Stadium, home of the Miami Dolphins, which will air on CBS this Sunday with Jim Nantz and Phil Simms doing the call. We also have two quarterbacks at their prime in the form of Drew Brees and Peyton Manning. But who deserves the Vince Lombardi Trophy? It's time we check it out.
New Orleans Saints
The Saints have never made it to the Super Bowl in their 43-year history. Prior to the victory over Brett Favre and the Vikings in the NFC Championship Game, the Saints came close to their first Super Bowl once before. That time came in 2006, when Reggie Bush came to town and became the force behind the Saints' renaissance following the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina on the people and culture of New Orleans. However, that team went 10-6, their best season since 1987, but lost to the Chicago Bears 39-14 at Soldier Field in the 2006 NFC Championship Game. The Saints this year went 13-3, bolstered by a 13-0 record by Week 14, and now have advanced to their first Super Bowl in team history. With a victory over the Colts in the Super Bowl, the Saints would capture their first-ever Vince Lombardi Trophy and give the city of New Orleans a much needed morale booster after the devastating hurricane nearly five years ago.
Indianapolis Colts
For the second time in four years, the Colts are playing in the Super Bowl. They won Super Bowl XLI three years earlier in Feb., 2007, defeating the NFC champion Chicago Bears 29-17 in a rainy Dolphin Stadium. All four of the Colts Super Bowl appearances have been in Miami, according to a tidbit when the Colts defeated the New York Jets 30-17 in the AFC Championship Game. If the Colts win the game, they will be the ninth team to win three Super Bowls. The Colts have gone to a 14-2 record in 2009, starting out 14-0 before losing their final two games against the Jets and Buffalo Bills.
Prediction
Since this is the first time in sixteen years that both #1 seeds in each conference made the Super Bowl, I predict this will be a closely decided contest. It will most likely be decided when the team has the ball last. I choose the New Orleans Saints to beat the Colts by a touchdown or less. Even though I am a Colts fan because of Manning and will be cheering for them loudly, New Orleans has more heart to win the game. Putting numbers in the mix, I'll say: Saints 40, Colts 33.
