Students at Southwest Minnesota State University shook off the winter blues during SMSU's annual Winter Meltdown week Jan. 26-30, themed "Frosty got flashed by paparazzi."

At Tuesday night's musician, students were encourage to "make friends with winter" by Ellis, a singer and songwriter from Minneapolis. She sang about everything from the wonders of life to wrong number phone calls to her love of coffee.

"It was really different," said Barun Joshi, a SMSU alum, "I liked the one with coffee."

This year, Ellis is working on her seventh album since she began playing in 1996. Other students thought she "was intense. But wonderful, I thought she was great," said Jacob Forstein, a senior theater major.

Wednesday's Spa Day was a big hit for many shaggy students. Free haircuts and styles, massages and manicures were offered during the day in the Student Center and gave students from the MnWest Pipestone Massage and Salon Schools real life experience.

"I just got off work and the massage was really relaxing," said Amanda Meine, sophomore environmental science major. "It'd be nice to have this again before finals."

The Dive-in movie, "Finding Nemo," scheduled for Wednesday night was forced to commence in the PE gym with a pool party to follow due to some technical difficulties.

The chilly air on Thursday night greeted many students as they made their way to the Conference Center for the mentalist Christopher Carter. Carter dumbfounded the crowd with his ability to distinguish objects based on "vibes," correctly guess students' full names, birthdates and childhood experiences, and illuminate light bulbs in the palms of students' hands.

"I was amazed that he knew my head hurt when I was 5," Anna Havumaki said, a senior exercise science major, after Carter narrated her childhood experience when she hit her head on a telephone pole.

In the lower level of the Student Center on Friday, students had the opportunity to make their own leis out of string and cloth flower petals in preparation for the Saturday night basketball game.

A DJ Dance pumped students up for the coming weekend Hawaiian Night game.

The aroma of chili filled the halls to the RA facility Saturday night during the chili contest sponsored by Student Mentors for Academic Success. First place was awarded to the Honor's Club, second place to Al's Chili and third place to CRU.

On Saturday night, the Mustangs played Bemidji State for a woman's 73-63 win and a men's 71-67 win during Hawaiian Night's basketball games. An abundance of school spirit filled the gymnasium as students arrived in their colorful Hawaiian wear.
