Poor shooting was a continuing story for both Mustang squads over the trip, as each team was swept.
On the men's side, No. 23 Augustana beat SMSU 89-58. The Vikings hit 15 three-pointers in the game. SMSU trailed by just six points going into halftime, but Augustana opened the second half on a 30-3 run to put the game away. Jordan Miller was the only SMSU player to reach double-digit scoring, with 14 points.
The men shot 42.6 percent from the field, while Augustana hit on 56.4 percent of its shots.
Wayne State then dropped SMSU 83-74 in double overtime the next night. The Mustangs did all they could to keep their hopes alive in the game. Miller brought the team back with five straight points in the final 49 seconds of regulation to send game into the first overtime. Kevin Andrews then hit a three with a second left in the first extra session to tie the game again.
Miller again led the Mustangs in scoring with 20 points. Scott Roehl had 19 points, while Andrews added 14. SMSU was at a disadvantage in three-point and free-throw shooting. The Mustangs were 4-of-20 from behind the arc and attempted 15 free throws. Wayne State went 6-for-16 on threes and 31-for-44 on free throws.
The men's loss to Wayne State marked their fourth loss in a row - all Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference games - before they beat Minnesota-Duluth 63-47 at the R/A Facility on Friday.
The Mustang women fell 78-58 to Augustana, shooting just 28.4 percent from the field.
Guards Tori Fink and Megan Stadler provided the offense for SMSU, with 17 points and 16 points, respectively.
Four Vikings scored in double figures. Faith Tinklenberg paced the team with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Augustana shot over 46 percent from the field and hit 10 threes.
SMSU struggled with its offense again versus Wayne State. The Mustangs shot a season-low 26.6 percent from the field, losing 73-47.
Abby Kenealy led SMSU with 10 points. Taylor Voss chipped in nine points - all on threes - and seven rebounds.
Wayne State had four players in double-digit scoring. Ashley Arlen led the way with 19 points and 12 rebounds, both game highs.
For the women, it was their third-straight loss before beating Minnesota-Duluth at home on Friday.
