We often hear DJ Rakesh in school, see him on the posters, hear his music in many of the school activities but hardly get to know him.
That is due to the fact that he works a lot.
DJ Rakesh is a Student Center Event Manager, he is a Public Safety officer and he is a performer for the SAC-sponsored Live @ the Landing event. Besides that, he DJs for many school events. He also organized a karaoke this semester for an event sponsored by Aramark.
DJing is not a gift given to everyone. Rakesh Gurung actually started in ninth grade as a guitar player and singer in the bars of Kathmandu, Nepal. He was known as a talented individual and published an album in high school. In Marshall, he performed for the high school, the Lyon County fair, the international art festival at SMSU and for many other clubs. He used to have a band at SMSU but two of the members graduated and another one transferred.
Gurung is currently a senior majoring in hospitality, concentration in restaurant management. He will be graduating in May but will be back next semester for one more class. He is a transfer student from West Virginia's Salem International University. He never regretted his transfer.
"I like SMSU as it is not as big as the other universities and it has a very friendly environment. I like the classes offered in hospitality management and I have very good teachers, like Michael Cheng and Kurt Struwe," Gurung said.
Gurung plans to open a restaurant with a bar, live music and a DJ.
"That is why I am trying to get as much experience as I can right now," Gurung said.
By opening a bar-restaurant, Gurung will be perpetuating a family tradition. He has a brother and a sister who own a bar and a club in Nepal.
Gurung likes organizing and managing things. That is why he chose hospitality management as a major. Rakesh is really happy and feels blessed, seeing that people are liking what he is doing.
"[The] last Homecoming Dance was a big event for me. We had more than 250 people in the upper level of the Conference Center for the dance," said Gurung.
When he has time, Gurung likes swimming, fishing, playing basketball, watching movies, traveling, listening to music, shopping, mixing songs, cooking, hanging out with friends and exercising. He believes everything happens for a reason and he is sure that he will never forget all the things that he experienced at SMSU.
