The Student Hospitatlity Organization of Southwest Minnesota State University was created about 30 years ago to prepare students and help them be better hospitality professionals.

Today, the goals haven't changed much. They still aim to give an opportunity to students to experience real life situations in the hospitality industry. The main activities of the club are catering and fundraising events.

The members of the club are in charge of the organization. They take care of everything from the food to the organizations. This gives them skills that would be beneficial to them when they start working.

"We provide an atmosphere for personal growth as well as networking," Amanda Doar, the marketing manager of the club said.

SHO gives a chance to students to attend trade shows, such as the National Restaurant Association and the Research Chef Association, where they get to know some of the hospitality industry leaders.

"SHO hopes that these connections will help the students find internships and jobs," Doar said.

"It is a great experience, looks good on a resume; we get to travel, try new food, and meet new and exciting people," said Doar. "The actual cooking in the kitchen is always an adventure. There is always something fun and exciting to do at SHO club!"

SHO is open to all majors. Their meetings are held on Thursdays at 12:30pm in IL 117. The current executives of SHO are Alissa Bootsma, President; Lance Bellinghausen, Vice-president; Sabrina Larson, Secretary; Katie Dilley, Treasurer; Christina Romans, Event Coordinator; and Amanda Doar, Marketing Manager. Their advisor is Michael Cheng, Director Associate Professor of Hospitality and Culinology.

Currently, SHO is involved with a "Haiti Pizza Fundraiser." They are selling hand tossed homemade personal pizzas for $5 from Feb. 1 to Feb. 5 in the BA/CH Link.
